Bedside Lamps: How Tall Should They Be?
Choose bedside light by seated eye level, shade, book illumination and available surface space.

In questo articolo
The right bedside lamp is not simply the one that fits on the nightstand. Sit up in bed, check the shade against your eyes and see whether the bulb is exposed. The source should avoid direct glare while providing sufficient light on the page.
The 30-second lamp-height test
Sit in your usual reading position. If the bulb shines directly into your eyes, the lamp may cause glare; if the shade sits too low, your book can stay dark. Mattress, nightstand, posture and shade all matter. There is no single ideal height.
| Situation | Priority |
|---|---|
| Reading | Useful beam and shielded bulb |
| Relaxing | Soft distribution and warm color |
| Small nightstand | Compact footprint |
| Different nightstands | Consistent light-source level |
1. Take three measurements
Measure nightstand height, usable surface width and distance from the headboard. Allow room for your phone, book and cable. Shade width matters as much as base size.

2. Warm color does not guarantee reading brightness
2700–3000K is a useful bedroom starting point. Kelvin indicates light color, not intensity. Reading comfort depends on actual light reaching the page, glare and beam direction. Check true dimming compatibility if it matters.
3. Material and shape change the light
A fabric shade may soften the atmosphere but not necessarily suit reading. Compare NAGI, TRIA and glass MIRA by the light they provide as well as appearance.

4. One lamp or two?
Independent lights are convenient for a shared bed, but they need not match perfectly. Repeat color temperature or material. A single lamp can be more practical in a compact room.
Before checkout
Check total height, shade width, EU/UK plug choice, bulb, switch position, cable and actual dimming support. A fixed warm-white variant is not necessarily adjustable after purchase.
FAQ
How tall should a bedside lamp be? Tall enough to shield direct glare while illuminating your usual activity. There is no universal number.
Are mushroom lamps good for reading? Some may work, but actual beam and output matter.

Measure before choosing
Measure your eye level while sitting in bed rather than using a universal bedside-lamp height. A shade may expose the bulb from below even when it looks fully covered in product photographs. NAGI uses a low oval fabric shade, while TRIA combines a cylindrical shade with a tripod base. Consider how much nightstand surface each design needs.
Compare products by what they do
Reading light and atmospheric light do different jobs. MIRA has a frosted-glass mushroom shade and G9 fitting, but that description doesn't prove enough light reaches your book. Check seated sightlines, task area and source compatibility.
Think about the space, not only the photograph
Two sides of a bed need not use identical lamps. One person may read, while another wants a softer decorative accent. NUBE offers selectable touch light tones with a synthetic feather-effect shade, but selectable colours do not automatically imply continuous dimming.
A practical test before checkout
Test an existing lamp at your nightstand for five minutes. Read, turn it off and reach for a glass of water. If the shade blocks your hand or you see an exposed bulb, fix height and placement before buying.
